We’re passionate about raising healthy, happy pups with excellent temperaments and robust wellness routines. Boston Terriers are full of energy and personality, but their compact jaws and brachycephalic (flat-faced) structure can make them prone to dental issues like plaque buildup, tartar, and bad breath. Proactive dental care is one of the best gifts you can give your Boston as it supports overall health, freshens breath for those sweet snuggles, and helps prevent costly vet procedures down the road. Nothing beats puppy doggy snuggles, especially when your dog has fresh breath!

Always start with one product at a time and monitor your dog's reactions to make sure that your dog can safely have any of these products. Always check with your veterinarian before adding new products to your dog's routine.

Today I'm sharing my recommendations for a simple, effective home dental routine. These picks focus on products with strong evidence of efficacy, especially those backed by the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC). I love sharing these trusted tools with our puppy families because I believe every Boston deserves the best start possible. By choosing VOHC-backed products, you're giving your furry friend science-backed protection that truly makes a difference.

What is the VOHC and Why Does It Matter?

The Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) is an independent organization that evaluates dental products for dogs (and cats) through rigorous clinical trials. Products earning the VOHC Seal of Acceptance have proven they reduce plaque and/or tartar by at least 20% under controlled testing.

Think of it as the “gold standard” stamp for pet dental care, similar to the American Dental Association seal on human toothpaste. Prioritizing VOHC-approved items gives you confidence that your efforts are making a real difference for your puppy's dental health. Check the official VOHC list for the latest approvals and consulting your veterinarian for personalized advice.

Recommended Daily Dental Care Routine for Boston Terriers

From teething puppies to active adults, Boston Terriers of all ages can benefit from this thoughtful approach to dental wellness. Consistency is key. It's as simple as: daily brushing (when possible), a daily dental chew, daily water additive support, occasional scraping treats, and safe chew toys. Here’s a practical combo that we use:

1. Enzymatic Toothpaste

Enzymatic formulas gently break down plaque without harsh foaming agents, making them safe if your dog swallows some (which most do!). The poultry or other pet-friendly flavors are usually a hit with Bostons. We use the one listed below because of it's clean formula.

Pro tip: Pair with a soft finger brush or dual-ended dog toothbrush for 3–7 sessions per week.

"HUMAN-GRADE, CLINICALLY PROVEN PROTECTION: Scientifically developed and loaded with natural antimicrobials, Tartar Shield Pro Care works to inhibit plaque and bacterial growth, leading to cleaner, healthier teeth and gums, and fresher breath long after brushing."

2. Dental Chews

These provide a tasty treat while freshening breath. Greenies have excellent VOHC credentials for plaque and tartar control. Click here for puppy sized treats, Greenies Teenie Original Dental Treats.

"Greenies dental treat for dogs have a unique design that cleans down to the gumline and positively balances the oral microbiome to help support whole-body health."

One chew per day is the sweet spot for most Bostons. Never leave your puppy with a chewie unattended and do not give chewies to your puppy until your puppy is old enough to eat them. Ask your vet if you need guidance on this or any of the other products in this article.

3. Water Additive

Add a capful of Skout's Honor Fresher Breath Water Additive to your dog’s water bowl daily for passive bacteria control and fresher breath, no extra effort required! VOHC-accepted options like this one help with plaque.

4. Scraping/Mechanical Chews

Virbac C.E.T. Enzymatic Oral Hygiene Chews for small dogs

Use these a few times a week for stronger physical cleaning action. This simple step fits easily into even the busiest puppy parent’s schedule while delivering noticeable results. This product is high protein, low fat, and no artificial colors or preservatives (always check packages for ingredient changes). Rawhide can be a choking hazard so never leave your dog unsupervised with this treat and check with your vet to find out when your puppy is old enough to have this treat.

5. Chew Toys

While few toys carry the VOHC seal, textured rubber toys encourage natural chewing that massages gums. Bostons are usually considered "aggressive" chewers so investing in durable brands like Kong will typically save you money in the long run.

Go-to: Dental Kong toy in small/medium size. Stuff with a dab of toothpaste for double benefits.

Sample Weekly Routine for Busy Boston Parents

  • Daily: Water additive + one dental chew such as Greenies

  • 3–7x/week: Quick brushing session with tartar shield toothpaste

  • 2–3x/week: Extra scraping chew such as Virbac CET Enzymatic Hygiene Chews

or focused play with a Kong toy

  • Monthly: Monitor for tartar buildup and schedule professional vet dental checks as needed

Whether you're welcoming a new puppy or caring for your beloved adult Boston, these gentle products help to make dental care feel like a breeze. Investing in a solid dental routine now can mean fewer dental issues, better breath, and a healthier life for your Boston Terrier. Start gradually, reward good behavior with praise (and maybe a tiny training treat), and watch their smiles stay sparkling! Before you know it, these small daily habits become second nature and your pup will thank you with fresher breath and happier play-times. Wagging tails and fresh kisses ahead! 🐾

Note: Always choose size-appropriate products, supervise chewing, and consult your veterinarian before starting new routines, especially if your dog has existing health conditions. Product links are for convenience; prices and availability may vary.
